It has become necessary to cancel this Thursday's Voices
of Faith presentation on Flannery O'Conner.
Sunday
morning, August 22nd presentation
on Flannery O'Conner, a devout
Roman Catholic and satirist who lived in and wrote about the segregated
South in the mid-20th century. Conscious always that issues of
the Protestant faith permeated the very fiber of her small-town life,
O'Connor wrote, "I write the way I do because (not though) I am a
Catholic. It seems to be a fact that you suffer as much from the Church
as for it, but if you believe in the divinity of Christ, you have to
cherish the world at the same time you struggle to endure
it." Known for her blackly humorous and macabre stories,
O'Connor has gained considerable literary acclaim since her early death
in 1964 at age 39 (and is a favorite among college students!).
