  • December 19: 7:30 pm - Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols - The service of Nine Lessons and Carols was first drawn up by Archbishop Edward White Benson when he was Bishop of Truro, for use in that Cathedral. It was later simplified and modified for use in King’s College, Cambridge in 1918, and is heard by millions the world over through live broadcasts on the BBC. The service begins with the beautiful hymn "Once in Royal David's City," with a lone treble voice starting, then joined by the choir, then sung by all. Through lessons and music it tells the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus.

One of the traditions of the Cambridge service is the inclusion of a carol setting written especially for the service. Our service includes two of them: “Adam Lay Ybounden” written in 1956 by Boris Ord (organist at King’s from 1929 to 1957), and “Dormi Jesu” written for the 1998 service by John Rutter. The Cathedral Choir and Cathedral Choristers invite you to join us for this wonderful beginning to our Christmas celebration!
